Tera Technos is a 100% affiliate of Posco to develop next-generation anode materials for secondary batteries, with the plans for the acquisition, according to Posco, which announced on July 5.
Posco Holdings Acquires Stake in Daejeon-based Company
Posco Holdings acquired the stake in the Daejeon-headquartered company, which has technology for silicon anode material production, it said. The unit that Posco founded on March 2 will serve as the holding company with primary objectives to plan out future business, R&D, and investments.
“We believe that silicon anode material, which is a next-generation anode material that can increase energy density fourfold compared to a graphite anode material used in most lithium-ion batteries, can help increase the driving range of electric vehicles, while also shortening charging times,” Posco said.
The silicone anode material market size is expected to grow 39% annually until 2030, with the silicone anode material content, which currently is less than 5%, expanding to greater than 10% by 2025 and greater than 25% by 2030, it added.
POSCO aims to complete acquisition of Tera Technos by the end of 2022 and start mass production and sales of Tera Technos' products on the first half of 2024.
The firm plans to increase its anode materials production capacity from 82,000 mt/year in 2022 to 138,000 mt/year in 2024 and to 320,000 mt/year in 2030.
